Unlike the original series of games, Syndicate is a first-person shooter set in 2069. Players assume control of Miles Kilo, an augmented agent working for EuroCorp in a corrupted, deceitful world in which corporations compete with each other for power.
Just in case anyone runs into the error "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142)" when running the game on Windows 10/11, I didn't manage to fix it (or reliably automate the below steps) but the game runs if you run it multiple times within a short timeframe.
Basically select the game's executable and hold Enter until the splash screen shows up (a random amount of error pop-ups will show up). Wait until you get past the intro logos, press Enter to access the main menu, tab out, click in a blank area of Windows Explorer to deselect the executable, click on the first error pop-up then hold Enter to close all of them.
It's not an ideal solution but at least the game will run. I had to install DXVK to fix an NVIDIA-specific crash in the first cutscene and also used my own AHK script to enable aim toggle and be able to bind mouse side buttons.
