The solution was to play with speakers instead of headset. You can try to change the sample rate from 48100 to 44100 or perhaps lower. Below those numbers starts to get into awful audio quality territory.

Another thing you can do is play the game without your headset enabled and without speakers. If the game runs fine then it is the same issue I've seen in various other Unreal games. one of the comments
